Kadamb Tree (Neolamarckia cadamba): Can It Grow in Jaipur? Care, Benefits and Meaning

Neolamarckia cadamba

Kadamb, Krishna's monsoon tree with golden ball-shaped flowers, comes from wet tropical country. Here is an honest guide to growing it in Jaipur's heat and frost, when and how to plant it, how much water it needs, and how it differs from the native kaim or kalam.

Can kadamb grow in Jaipur?

It can, but it will not look after itself here.

In the wild, kadamb grows on deep, moist soil along rivers, usually with more than 1,500 mm of rain a year. Jaipur gets about 600–650 mm, nearly all in July–September. In its natural range, summer highs run 32–42 °C and winter lows 3–15.5 °C. Jaipur's summers often cross 45 °C (the record is 48.5 °C), and winter nights have dropped to −2.2 °C.

ICRAF lists kadamb as sensitive to frost, drought, waterlogging and grazing, and ICFRE's institute in Coimbatore (IFGTB) calls it intolerant of frost. Saplings also need protection from hot sun.

Kadamb has been recorded on unusually dry sites with as little as 200 mm of rain, probably where its roots reach groundwater. In Braj, which shares Jaipur's hot summers, the Mathura–Vrindavan road saplings went in with a tree guard each. We found no published survival figures for that planting, or for any kadamb planting in Rajasthan.

No reliable soil pH range has been published for kadamb. It does poorly on leached, poorly aerated soil and prefers fertile, well-drained alluvium, so Jaipur's sandy, alkaline ground needs a well-prepared pit.

Our verdict: marginal. Plant kadamb in Jaipur only where you can water it through at least its first three or four summers: a garden, a temple or school compound, or the edge of a tank, with some shelter from the west. It is not a tree for dry open land or an unwatered roadside.
